Why a USDT TRC-20 Transfer Fails: Causes and Solutions

Sending USDT and seeing an error instead of a transaction confirmation is frustrating, especially when the transfer is urgent. The good news is that in most cases the cause is typical and can be fixed in a few minutes. Let's look at why a USDT TRC-20 transfer fails, how to find the cause and what to do so the transaction goes through on the first try.
Not enough Energy in the wallet
The most common cause of an error when sending USDT on the TRON network is missing or insufficient Energy. A TRC-20 token transfer is a smart contract call and requires 65,000 to 131,000 units of Energy, depending on the state of the recipient's address.
If Energy is insufficient, the network either burns TRX as compensation, or the transaction ends with the TRON OUT OF ENERGY error if there is also not enough TRX in the balance to cover the costs. This error is most often encountered by users who keep only USDT in their wallet without a TRX reserve.
Not enough TRX to cover the network fee
Even if you have Energy, a small TRX balance is still necessary. Some network operations require Bandwidth, which, when lacking, is also covered by TRX. In addition, some wallets set their own minimum TRX threshold for allowing transactions.
Trust Wallet, for example, requires at least 28 TRX in the balance, even if Energy is fully available. Without it, the wallet will not let you send the transaction regardless of your resources.
The OUT OF ENERGY error
The OUT OF ENERGY error occurs when the wallet has neither Energy nor enough TRX to compensate for its absence. In this case, the network rejects the transaction entirely.
The solution is straightforward: get the required amount of Energy before resending. For a standard USDT transfer to an active address, 65,000 Energy is enough; to a new address, 131,000. Once you have the Energy, you can resend the transaction.
Wrong network or recipient address
Another common reason why USDT won't send is a mistake in the address or choosing the wrong network. TRON addresses start with the letter T. If the recipient's address looks different or was copied incorrectly, the transaction will either fail or go to the wrong place.
Before sending, always manually check the first and last four characters of the address. The clipboard can substitute a modified address if malware is active on the device; this is a separate risk worth remembering.
Inactive TRON address
A new TRON address is considered inactive until it receives its first transaction. Sending USDT to an inactive address is technically possible, but it requires higher Energy consumption: about 131,000 units. If the Energy in the wallet is sized for a standard 65,000 transfer, the transaction may fail or result in TRX being burned.
You can check the recipient address status in TronScan: an inactive address is shown without transaction history or balance.
How to find the cause of an error with TronScan
A failed TRON transaction is always recorded on the blockchain and can be viewed in TronScan. The steps are simple: open tronscan.org, enter your wallet address, go to the Transactions section and find the latest failed operation. The transaction details show the cause of the error: OUT OF ENERGY, insufficient TRX, an invalid address or another reason.
This lets you pinpoint the problem instead of acting at random.
What to do before resending
Before resending the transaction, run a few checks:
- make sure the wallet has enough Energy for the specific type of transfer;
- check your TRX balance: at least 28 TRX for Trust Wallet, a small reserve for other wallets;
- check the recipient's address in TronScan and make sure the correct network is selected;
- if the recipient's address is new, order 131,000 Energy, not 65,000.
How to get Energy and fix the error
The fastest way to get the required amount of Energy is via FeeSaver. Go to the FeeSaver website or open the Telegram bot, enter your wallet address, choose the amount of Energy and pay for the order in TRX. The Energy will arrive at your address within 5–10 seconds. Then resend the USDT, and the transaction will go through without errors.

Why is there not enough TRX for the fee if I have USDT in my wallet?
USDT and TRX are different tokens. The TRON network does not accept USDT as payment for network costs. To cover Bandwidth and compensate for missing Energy, you need TRX specifically.
-
Can I get back TRX burned because of an error?
No. Burned TRX is not returned. That is why it is important to get Energy before sending a transaction, not after an error.

Not enough energy for a USDT transfer: how much should I order?
65,000 Energy for a transfer to an active address, 131,000 for a transfer to a new address without USDT. You can check the recipient address status in TronScan for free.
